IOBit accused of stealing proprietary Malwarebytes database
// November 3rd, 2009 // News
Marcin Kleczynski, CEO of Malwarebytes, has posted a detailed accusation, presenting evidence that IOBit (A Chinese security vendor) is stealing the Malwarebytes database of threats.
IOBit, based in Chengdu, provide a product called IOBit Security 360.
Kleczynski, CEO of Malwarebytes Corporation, had this to say on the company blog:
“We came across a post on the IOBit forums that showed IOBit Security 360 flagging a specific key generator for our Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware software using the exact naming scheme we use to flag such keygens: Don’t.Steal.Our.Software.A.
Dont.Steal.Our.Software.A, File, G:\Nothing Much\Anti-Spyware\Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware v1.39\Key_Generator.exe, 9-30501
Why would IOBit detect a keygen for our software and refer to it using our database name? We quickly became suspicious. Either the forum post was fraudulent or IOBit was stealing our database.”
After an internal investigation, Malwarebytes came to the conclusion that this was not an isolated incident, and the IOBit were intentionally stealing records from the Malwarebytes database to use as their own.” He continues:
“The final confirmation of IOBit’s theft occurred when we added fake definitions to our database for a fake rogue application we called Rogue.AVCleanSweepPro. This “malware” does not actually exist: we made it up. We even manufactured fake files to match the fake definitions. Within two weeks IOBit was detecting these fake files under almost exactly these fake names.”
Security vendors have long been battling software pirates, but now it also seems that there is an internal struggle between certain morally corrupt “security” vendors such as IOBit, who seem to think it OK to steal proprietary information, when they themselves sell a commercial antimalware product. What hypocrites!

Sorry to hear that.
Is IOBit very famous? I’ve never heard of it. I don’t know whether it is Chinese software, as it is in the “Foreign Antivirus” discussion boards of the computer forums here.
