ThreatNuker- Another dubious application to avoid

// February 20th, 2009 // No Comments » // Malware Related

ThreatNuker claims to “protect your pc from online threats”……but after checking this one out it has left me in no doubt of it’s true intentions.

The website looks fairly normal and promises “No charge for a test drive”:

So I went right ahead and downloaded a copy to “test-drive”.

Installer seems quite standard and nothing untoward so far…

The installer finished it’s work quickly and the actual program itself seems to be very simple on first glance, and the first hint of deception quickly became apparent….there didn’t seem to be sign of the claimed “protection” apart from what seemed to be a mockup of Internet Explorer settings on the second tab…

And then we have the actual “scan”:

Scan with huge number of detections
Oh my oh my….so many threats on a brand new Windows Vista install, direct from a Microsoft DVD. Looks like ThreatNuker is rearing its ugly head…..

No detailed descriptions of what these “threats” are, and the threat list only gives some URL’s which isn’t exactly helpful: List of threats

Finally, as with all the other examples of “bad” software, ThreatNuker requires registration and payment before it will allow you to deal with any of the supposed threats.

I think it is safe to say that this is one software best avoided.
